Fiber-Optic Cable

A fiber-optic cable, also known as an optical-fiber cable, is an assembly similar to an electrical cable but containing one or more optical fibers. These fibers are used to carry light signals. Here are some key points about fiber optic cables:

  1. Design:

  • An optical fiber consists of a core and a cladding layer. The core and cladding have different refractive indices, allowing for total internal reflection of light within the core.
  • The core is usually coated with a layer of acrylate polymer or polyimide, which protects the fiber.
  • The fibers are then enclosed in a protective tube suitable for the environment where the cable is used.
  • Different types of cables are used for various applications, such as long-distance telecommunication or high-speed data connections within buildings
  1. Types:

  • Single-mode: Supports only one light mode, ideal for long-distance communication.
  • Multimode: Supports multiple light modes, suitable for shorter distances.
  • Patch cords, multi-fiber cables, and ribbon cables are common types

  1. Applications:

  • Telecommunications: Replaced copper wire in long-distance telephone lines.
  • Data networks: Used for high-speed data transmission.
  • Medical imaging, LANs, and more

Fiber optics enable faster data transmission and reliable connectivity across vast distances.
